Built to Last. Designed to Evolve.
Corten steel is at the heart of every Kindle and Kin fire pit. Chosen for its strength, longevity, and natural beauty, it’s a material that transforms over time - developing a rich, earthy patina that tells a story with every use.
Below is how corten behaves in the real world—from the alloy itself, to the patina journey, to the 5mm steel we choose for Kindle and Kin fire pits.
Weathering steel, by design
Corten steel, also known as weathering steel, is a high-strength alloy designed to form a stable, rust-like surface when exposed to the elements.
Unlike ordinary steel, which continues to corrode, corten develops a protective outer layer. That patina acts as a barrier—slowing further corrosion and removing the need for paint or coatings.
The result is a material that is:
- Structurally strong
- Exceptionally durable
- Visually distinctive
- Virtually maintenance-free
New patina, mature patina
One of the most distinctive things about corten is how its finish evolves.
New patina reads brighter and more orange; mature patina deepens into rich brown tones with a more settled, matte texture. Both are normal stages of the same protective layer—not a flaw and not raw corrosion eating the steel.
When your fire pit arrives, weathering has already begun. With rain, air, and use, colour deepens, the surface becomes more uniform, and the steel settles into its signature look.
No two pieces are identical—each one becomes uniquely yours.
Why we use 5mm corten steel
We use 5mm thick corten steel on purpose—a spec that sets our fire pits apart.
This thickness delivers:
- Superior heat resistance for repeated fires without warping
- Real structural integrity—substantial, weighty, and resistant to flex
- Long life in harsh outdoor conditions
- A premium feel you can see at the edge and feel in the hand
It is not only about how it looks—it is about performance and durability over years of use.
Made for outdoors, made to last
Built for Australian conditions
Corten performs exceptionally well here. It suits outdoor exposure year-round, heat from frequent fires, and natural weather cycles—whether your place is landscaped, coastal, or rural.
Low maintenance, high impact
Unlike painted or coated materials, corten needs very little. Allow natural weathering, avoid sealing or painting the surface, and keep the bowl clear of debris when not in use. The material does the rest.
A material that tells a story
From the first burn to years of gatherings, your fire pit evolves with you. Changing tones, subtle markings, and a weathered finish add up to something grounded, authentic, and timeless.
