Fire Safety

At Kindle and Kin, safety is just as important as performance. Our fire pits are designed for outdoor enjoyment, but like any open flame, they must be used responsibly and with care.

When setting up your fire pit, always choose a stable, level surface made from non-combustible materials such as gravel, stone, or concrete. Ensure there is adequate clearance from structures, fencing, furniture, and overhanging branches. A well-prepared space not only improves safety but enhances your overall experience.

Only burn suitable materials such as dry, seasoned hardwood. Avoid treated timber, green wood, or accelerants, as these can produce excessive smoke, sparks, or harmful fumes. Never leave a fire unattended, and always supervise children and pets around the fire pit.

Before lighting a fire, check local regulations and fire restrictions in your area, particularly during warmer months. Keep a water source, hose, or fire extinguisher nearby at all times, and ensure the fire is fully extinguished once you’ve finished using it.

Our fire pits are built from durable, high-quality steel and are designed to withstand outdoor conditions, but safe use ultimately comes down to proper setup and operation.

FAQs

As a general rule, fire pits should be placed at least 3 metres away from buildings, fences and other structures.

It’s also important to ensure there are no low hanging branches or overhead structures nearby.

Always check local regulations or council guidelines, as requirements may vary depending on your location.

One of the advantages of corten steel is that it requires very little maintenance.

The steel naturally forms a protective rust-like patina that helps shield the material from further corrosion.

Aside from occasionally removing ash and keeping the fire pit clean, very little maintenance is required.

A quality fire pit should be made from thick steel that can withstand repeated heating and cooling cycles.

Thin steel fire pits can warp or deteriorate quickly. Higher-quality fire pits are typically made from 5mm to 6mm steel, which provides excellent durability and longevity.

Thicker steel also helps retain heat and creates a more substantial, stable fire pit.

We recommend burning dry hardwood firewood such as:

  • Red gum
  • Ironbark
  • Yellow box

Hardwood burns hotter, longer and produces less smoke than softwood.

Avoid treated timber, painted wood or construction offcuts.

Yes.

Our stainless steel grill accessory allows you to cook directly over the fire. It’s perfect for simple outdoor cooking such as:

  • steaks
  • vegetables
  • sausages
  • marshmallows

Cooking over a wood fire creates a fantastic flavour and is one of the best ways to enjoy time around the fire with family and friends.

Yes — and that’s intentional.

Our fire pits are built from thick steel so they are strong, stable and built to last. Most of our fire pits weigh around 50+kg, which helps them sit securely in place during use.

Because of their weight, we recommend positioning the fire pit where you plan to use it before lighting your first fire.

Choosing the right size fire pit mostly depends on the size of your outdoor space and how many people you expect to gather around the fire.

All Harlo fire pits share the same design — the main difference is the diameter and the scale of the fire they create.

70cm – Compact
This size is ideal for smaller patios, courtyards or more intimate spaces. It provides a beautiful contained fire and is perfect for smaller gatherings or where space is limited.

100cm – Original
The 100cm Harlo is our most popular size and suits the majority of backyards. It creates a generous fire with excellent heat and comfortably becomes the centrepiece for gatherings with family and friends.

130cm – Grand
The 130cm Harlo makes a large visual statement and is ideal for bigger outdoor spaces or entertaining areas. It allows for a larger fire and works well when you regularly host larger groups.

If you’re unsure, the 100cm size is the best all-round choice for most homes — large enough to create a great fire while still fitting comfortably in typical backyard spaces.

Kindle and Kin was created around a simple idea — bringing people together around fire.

Our products are designed to help create moments of connection with family and friends in the backyard, whether that’s a quiet winter evening, cooking over the fire, or gathering with a glass of wine under the stars.

We focus on simple, durable designs that feel at home in natural outdoor spaces.
