    Questions About Fire Pits

Choosing the right size fire pit mostly depends on the size of your outdoor space and how many people you expect to gather around the fire.

All Harlo fire pits share the same design — the main difference is the diameter and the scale of the fire they create.

    70cm – Compact
This size is ideal for smaller patios, courtyards or more intimate spaces. It provides a beautiful contained fire and is perfect for smaller gatherings or where space is limited.

    100cm – Original
The 100cm Harlo is our most popular size and suits the majority of backyards. It creates a generous fire with excellent heat and comfortably becomes the centrepiece for gatherings with family and friends.

    130cm – Grand
The 130cm Harlo makes a large visual statement and is ideal for bigger outdoor spaces or entertaining areas. It allows for a larger fire and works well when you regularly host larger groups.

If you’re unsure, the 100cm size is the best all-round choice for most homes — large enough to create a great fire while still fitting comfortably in typical backyard spaces.

Our fire pits are built from thick steel and designed for years of use.

With normal backyard use and basic care, your fire pit should provide many seasons of warmth, cooking and outdoor gatherings.

Over time the steel may develop a natural patina from exposure to heat and weather — this is normal and part of the character of a real wood fire pit.

    Yes.

Our stainless steel grill accessory allows you to cook directly over the fire. It’s perfect for simple outdoor cooking such as:

    • steaks
    • vegetables
    • sausages
    • marshmallows

Cooking over a wood fire creates a fantastic flavour and is one of the best ways to enjoy time around the fire with family and friends.

    Yes — and that’s intentional.

Our fire pits are built from thick steel so they are strong, stable and built to last. Most of our fire pits weigh around 50+kg, which helps them sit securely in place during use.

Because of their weight, we recommend positioning the fire pit where you plan to use it before lighting your first fire.

A quality fire pit should be made from thick steel that can withstand repeated heating and cooling cycles.

Thin steel fire pits can warp or deteriorate quickly. Higher-quality fire pits are typically made from 5mm to 6mm steel, which provides excellent durability and longevity.

Thicker steel also helps retain heat and creates a more substantial, stable fire pit.

Yes. Corten steel is specifically designed to perform well outdoors.

Once the protective patina forms, it helps protect the steel from deeper corrosion. This makes corten steel a popular choice for:

    • outdoor sculptures
    • landscaping features
    • architectural elements
    • fire pits

With normal use, a corten steel fire pit can last for many years outdoors.

Yes — but in a controlled and beneficial way.

Corten steel is designed to form a stable rust-like patina on its surface. This layer actually helps protect the steel underneath from deeper corrosion.

This natural weathering process is what gives corten steel its distinctive warm appearance.

Corten steel is a special type of weathering steel designed to develop a protective surface patina when exposed to the elements.

It is commonly used in architecture, landscaping and outdoor design because it:

    • is extremely durable
    • requires minimal maintenance
    • develops a beautiful natural finish

For fire pits, corten steel offers the perfect balance of strength, longevity and outdoor character.

Corten steel is designed to develop a natural rusted patina over time. During the early stages of this process, it’s normal for some rust residue to wash off the surface - especially after rain or when the fire pit is first exposed to the elements.

This runoff can potentially cause staining on porous surfaces such as concrete, pavers, decking, and natural stone.

To minimise or prevent staining, we recommend:

    • Placing your fire pit on a non-porous or sacrificial surface (such as gravel, crushed rock, or a heat-resistant mat)
    • Avoiding placement directly on light-coloured concrete or tiles during the initial weathering phase
    • Allowing space for water runoff to drain away from finished surfaces

Once the patina has fully developed, the steel stabilises and runoff significantly reduces, meaning the risk of staining becomes much lower over time.

If you’re unsure about placement, it’s always best to take a cautious approach early on while the patina is forming.
