Corten steel is designed to develop a natural rusted patina over time. During the early stages of this process, it’s normal for some rust residue to wash off the surface - especially after rain or when the fire pit is first exposed to the elements.
This runoff can potentially cause staining on porous surfaces such as concrete, pavers, decking, and natural stone.
To minimise or prevent staining, we recommend:
- Placing your fire pit on a non-porous or sacrificial surface (such as gravel, crushed rock, or a heat-resistant mat)
- Avoiding placement directly on light-coloured concrete or tiles during the initial weathering phase
- Allowing space for water runoff to drain away from finished surfaces
Once the patina has fully developed, the steel stabilises and runoff significantly reduces, meaning the risk of staining becomes much lower over time.
If you’re unsure about placement, it’s always best to take a cautious approach early on while the patina is forming.
